| Biography |
| Dr Elizabeth Shaw, more commonly known as Liz, is an accomplished scientist and an expert on meteorites, with degrees in several disciplines, including physics and medicine. She was drafted in from the University of Cambridge to serve as a scientific advisor to the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce (UNIT), although she was eventually reassigned as an assistant to the Doctor. At first sceptical of UNIT’s ambit to defend the Earth against alien invasion, Liz was forced to change her mind after encountering the newly regenerated Doctor and the hostile Nestene Consciousness During her time with UNIT she encountered many other alien races, including the Silurians and the so-called ‘Ambassadors of Death’. Eventually, however, she chose to leave the organisation and return to her own research projects. A highly intelligent and independent woman, Liz had never been suited to the role of ‘assistant’, and the death of her friend Jean Basemore at the hands of the Cybermen affected her greatly. After leaving UNIT, Liz published several well-renowned – and occasionally ground-breaking – scientific papers, before eventually leaving Cambridge once more and joining the Preternatural Research Bureau. |
